With the growing realisation of the urgency with which the problems confronting the world need to be addressed it is encouraging that there are an increasing number of centres taking these issues seriously. At the University level there is the Centre for International Studies at Oxford, the Confronting Global Challenges 2017-2067 at the LSE in London, the Global Challenges course at Brunel, and the well established Global Studies department at Utrecht amongst many others. At the secondary education level there is the partnership between the IB (International Baccalaureate) and SDSN (Sustainable Development Solutions Network) Youth and Global School Programme with their ‘#generation IB\u2019 project. These are all successful and commendable.<\/p>\n

But there is something quite unique about PANKA which has a direct and powerful synergy with the Climate Change School Strike movement that is sweeping the world inspired by the Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg. This is the democratic bottom-up student led approach to the learning that will take place in the Finnish Centre where students of various ages and nationalities will direct their own learning in a self-governing community. Students and staff will work together on the principle of \u2018one person one vote.\u2019 This will offer a Vygotskyan aspect of \u2019tool as result\u2019 to the programme where students will already be practising an aspect of their solutions to global issues though the management of their everyday lives in the Centre.<\/p>\n
